Definition and types of components of the charging and cooling system
A petrol turbocharger uses exhaust gases to drive an impeller that compresses air within the engine, increasing its efficiency. Air conditioning compressors, such as the BMW E90 air conditioning compressor or the Golf 5 air conditioning compressor, are responsible for compressing the refrigerant in the air conditioning system. BMW E60 air conditioning condensers function as a heat exchanger, lowering the refrigerant's temperature before it circulates through the system. These components enable efficient management of air temperature and pressure within the engine and cooling system.
How do turbochargers, compressors and coolers work?
Turbochargers, compressors and intercoolers play different but complementary roles in improving engine performance:
- Turbochargers – They increase the amount of air supplied to the engine, which allows it to burn more fuel and increase power.
- Compressors – They work similarly to turbochargers, but are mechanically driven, allowing for an immediate increase in power without any delay in response.
