What is the construction and purpose of wiper arms?

Wiper arms are components mounted on the axes of the wiper mechanism, whose task is to guide the blades across the glass surface. A typical arm consists of a body, a mounting socket, a hinge, and a tip for blade installation. This part comes in a front or rear version and must be compatible with the vehicle placement and the OEM number.

What are wiper arms used for?

Wiper arms are used to transfer motion from the drive mechanism to the blades and to maintain proper pressure on the glass. This allows the system to effectively remove water, mud, and other debris from the driver's field of vision. An improperly functioning arm can cause streaks, noise, wiper skipping, and incomplete glass cleaning.

What role does the wiper arm hinge play?

The wiper arm hinge is a movable connection element that allows the arm to maintain the correct working angle relative to the glass. The hinge serves to compensate for movement and supports even blade pressure during the entire work cycle. Wear in this area can cause delayed wiper reaction, uneven movement, and deterioration of blade-to-glass contact.

How to choose a wiper arm for a specific car?

The safest way is to compare the OEM part number, mounting side, and the type of connection to the mechanism axis. It is also worth checking the body version, the position of the element on the vehicle, and the blade mounting method. In some cars, the pre-facelift or post-facelift version and rear wiper equipment also matter.

What symptoms indicate wiper arm wear?

The most common symptoms include uneven blade pressure, leaving uncleared zones, noise during operation, and visible play at the mount. A warning signal can also be corrosion, hinge seizure, or a change in the wiper's resting position after being turned off. Such symptoms should be assessed together with the condition of the blade and the drive mechanism.

How to maintain wiper arms after installation?

After installation, it is worth regularly removing dirt, road salt, and deposits from the arms, which can accelerate corrosion. A good practice is to check the tightness of the mount and the condition of the hinge and the blade tip. During periodic service, it is good to check cooperating elements so that the windshield cleaning system works evenly.
