What is the construction and purpose of rims and tires?

Rims and tires are elements of the wheel assembly that connect the car to the road surface and carry loads while driving. The rim is a rigid part attached to the hub, equipped with mounting holes and a tire seating surface, while the tire is responsible for grip, dampening bumps, and driving stability. Depending on the vehicle version, this set also works with TPMS sensors, bolts or studs, and the braking system.

What are rims and tires used for?

Rims and tires are used to safely transfer drive, braking forces, and loads acting on the car in motion. They are responsible for handling stability, braking efficiency, and driving comfort on various surfaces. Their correct fit also affects the operation of the suspension, the accuracy of electronic system readings, and the correct fit of the wheel in the wheel arch.

What is the construction and function of centering rings?

Centering rings are mounting elements used between the hub and the rim when the rim's center bore diameter is larger than the hub diameter. They are used for correct wheel seating and to reduce the risk of vibration resulting from inaccurate centering. Their selection requires checking the inner and outer diameter and the material, as it depends on the specific rim and hub.

How to choose rims and tires for a specific car version?

It is best to compare the OEM number, diameter, width, ET, bolt pattern, and center bore with the data intended for the given car version. It is also worth checking the brake size, body type, suspension version, and the presence of TPMS sensors. For complete wheel sets, tire size compatibility on a given axle also matters.

What symptoms indicate a problem with a rim or wheel accessory?

Typical symptoms include steering wheel vibration, difficulties with balancing, uneven tire wear, or leaks at the tire-rim interface. In practice, it is also worth checking the condition of the edges, the surface near the bolts, the center bore, and the mounting elements. Incorrectly selected bolts, spacers, or rings can cause problems even when the rim itself looks correct.

What to pay attention to when mounting used rims and complete wheels?

Before mounting, compare the rim markings with the vehicle data, check the condition of the threads, contact surfaces, and mounting accessories. In the case of complete wheels, it is worth verifying pressure sensors, tire mounting direction, and set compatibility with the front or rear axle. After mounting, correct balancing and checking the wheel seating on the hub are important.
