What is the construction and purpose of wheel spacers and spigot rings?

Wheel spacers and spigot rings are components mounted at the connection between the hub and the wheel. A spacer is a shim that changes the wheel offset, while a spigot ring adjusts the wheel's center bore diameter to the hub. A typical component can be made of aluminum or plastic, depending on the function and design of the wheel system. Their purpose is to improve wheel fitment and ensure the wheel is correctly seated on the car.

What are wheel spacers and spigot rings used for?

Wheel spacers and spigot rings are used for the correct installation of wheels and to stabilize wheel operation after mounting. Spacers change the position of the wheel relative to the hub, which can facilitate fitment to the caliper, wheel arch, or wheel parameters. Spigot rings reduce play at the wheel-hub connection, allowing the wheel to rotate axially without generating unwanted vibrations. Without proper fitment of these components, issues with wheel runout, installation, or even seating may occur.

What role does the wheel center bore play?

The wheel center bore is the part that interacts directly with the hub or spigot ring. The center bore is used to properly seat the wheel and establish its position before fully tightening the bolts or nuts. Its diameter must match the hub or require the use of an appropriate reduction ring. Improper fitment in this area can result in vibrations and problems with wheel centering.

How to choose wheel spacers and spigot rings for a specific car?

It is best to compare the OEM number, interchangeable numbers, hub diameter, wheel center bore diameter, and the wheel mounting method. It is also worth considering the body version, wheel type, and any brake system modifications, as these affect the space available at the wheel. When purchasing, verification by VIN and checking the data available in the product description is also helpful.

What symptoms indicate poorly selected spigot rings or spacers?

Most commonly, vibrations felt while driving, problems with even wheel seating, and difficulties during wheel tightening occur. Uneven contact of the wheel to the hub or rubbing resulting from improper wheel offset can also happen. Such symptoms should be checked immediately upon installation or after the first test drive.

How to maintain wheel spacers and spigot rings after installation?

After a seasonal wheel change, it is good to check the condition of the contact surfaces, the cleanliness of the seats, and any signs of corrosion or deformation. You should also check that the components have no cracks and that the matching bolts or nuts are compatible with the used configuration. Regular inspection makes it easier to maintain proper fitment of the wheel to the hub.
