What is the construction and purpose of spoilers and wings?

Spoilers and wings are body elements usually mounted in the rear part of the vehicle, on the trunk lid, roof, or tailgate. A typical element consists of an outer part, bases or brackets, and mounting points matched to a specific car model. Their purpose is to influence the airflow around the body and improve the car's appearance.

What are spoilers and wings used for?

Spoilers and wings are used to shape the airflow behind the vehicle and can reduce turbulence or increase rear axle downforce. Besides their aerodynamic function, they also influence aesthetics, as they emphasize the body line and the sporty character of the car. Their proper fitment is important for stability at higher speeds and for alignment with the lid or roof.

What is the construction and function of spoiler mounting points?

Spoiler mounting points are places provided by the manufacturer to seat the element on the body using screws, clips, brackets, or mounting tapes. Their function is to stably transfer loads generated during driving and maintain the correct position of the part relative to the lid or roof. In practice, one must check the mounting spacing, base shape, and compatibility with the specific body version.

How to choose a spoiler or wing for a specific car?

It is best to compare the OEM part number, body version, mounting location, and element color. It also matters whether the part comes from a pre-facelift or post-facelift version and whether it has identical mounting points. Verification by VIN is also useful, especially in cars with additional styling packages.

What symptoms indicate damage or poor mounting of a spoiler?

The most common symptoms are vibrations, air noise, uneven adhesion to the body, and visible cracks at the bases or screws. In some cases, corrosion also appears at the mounting points or one side of the element sticks out. Such a condition should be checked before further driving and before purchasing a replacement part.

How to take care of spoilers and wings after installation?

After installation, it is worth cleaning the surface regularly and checking if the mounts have loosened due to vibrations and weather conditions. It is also good practice to check the condition of the paint, edges, and connection points with the body. If the element interacts with the trunk lid or roof, one should observe whether friction or leaks occur.
