What is the construction and purpose of spare wheel holders and covers?

Spare wheel holders and covers are elements used for mounting and covering a wheel transported in a vehicle. A typical set includes a bracket or pressure bolt, mounting points, and a cover made of material resistant to dirt and moisture. These parts are mounted in the trunk recess, under the floor, on the tailgate, or on an external carrier, depending on the car's design.

What are spare wheel holders and covers used for?

Spare wheel holders and covers are used for stable storage of the wheel and protection of the tire and rim against dirt, moisture, and mechanical damage. In addition to the protective function, they also facilitate quick access to the wheel during a breakdown. A properly selected set reduces noise in the trunk and helps keep the mounting area tidy.

What is the construction and function of a spare wheel bracket?

A spare wheel bracket is a load-bearing element that holds the weight of the wheel and transfers it to the body or designated mounting points of the vehicle. Its construction usually includes a plate, an arm, bolt guidance, or places for additional mounts. The bracket affects the stability of the transported wheel, and its shape and hole spacing must be compatible with the specific car version.

How to choose a holder or cover for a specific car?

It is best to compare the OEM number, interchangeable numbers, mounting method, and vehicle placement. It is also worth checking the spare wheel diameter, body version, and whether the part comes from a pre-facelift or post-facelift variant, if the manufacturer used different solutions.

What symptoms indicate wear of spare wheel holders or covers?

The most common symptoms are play, rattling in the trunk, difficulties removing the wheel, corrosion of the pressure bolt, and abrasions or cracks in the cover. In cars with external mounting, a sign of a problem can also be poor fitment of the element with the tailgate or weakening of the mounting points.

How to maintain spare wheel holders and covers?

It is worth regularly removing mud, salt, and moisture from the wheel recess and checking the condition of bolts, threads, and mounts. It is good to clean the cover with products suitable for the material and protect metal elements against corrosion to maintain easy installation and removal of parts.
