What is the construction and purpose of headlights?

Headlights are lighting assemblies mounted on the left and right sides of the front of the vehicle. A typical headlight consists of a housing, a lens, an optical element, mounts, and an electrical connector, and in more advanced versions, also a control module or ballast. Their primary task is to illuminate the road and ensure the vehicle is visible to other road users.

What are headlights used for?

Headlights are used for safe driving after dark, in rain, fog, and other conditions of limited visibility. They are responsible for properly illuminating the lane ahead of the car and for signaling the vehicle's presence on the road. Not only the driver's comfort but also the correct perception of the vehicle by other road users depends on their efficiency.

What role does the lamp module play?

The lamp module is an electronic controller that works with the headlight, managing the power supply and operation of selected lighting functions. Depending on the design, it may be responsible for LEDs, leveling, cornering lights, or communication with the vehicle's electrical system. Its compatibility must be checked separately, as even externally similar lamps may have different controllers and connectors.

How to choose headlights for a specific car version?

It is best to compare the OEM part number, interchangeable numbers, mounting side, and body version. It is also worth checking whether the car has halogen, xenon, or LED lights and whether the headlight comes from a pre-facelift or post-facelift version. For more complex lamps, the compatibility of modules and plug types is also important.

What signs of headlight damage should I look for?

The most common signs are a foggy lens, cracks, moisture inside the lamp, damaged brackets, and an uneven light beam. In lamps equipped with electronics, controller errors or the failure of selected functions may also occur. Before installation, it is also worth checking the condition of the pins and the housing at the back of the headlight.

Does headlight installation require additional checks after mounting?

Yes, after installation, you should check the fitment of the lamp with the fender, bumper, and grille, and verify the operation of all light functions. It is also very important to adjust the beam height so as not to dazzle other drivers. In cars with more advanced lighting, additional adaptation or coding may be required.
